I know it's a day late, but 1st Grade just finished their Hundertwasser-inspired dots! Friedensreich Hundertwasser is known for his whimsical, organic compositions, melding nature and man in colorful landscapes.

We began the unit by tracing different sized circles and drawing patterns and designs inside with oil pastels. We looked at the types of patterns Hundertwasser created in his "dots", including concentric circles, and other shapes, and talked about how they reminded us of lollipops and trees.  We then focused on the backgrounds, noticing how Hundertwasser used organic (wavy, flowy, natural) lines to divided up his paper, creating landscapes filled with strange buildings and roads. Students used a black oil pastel to draw lines and shapes on their background papers.

We painted both the dots and the backgrounds with watercolors, cut out the dots and glued them to our backgrounds. Here is a small sampling of some of the 1st Graders' works.
