Kindergarten's Color Exploration! Part 1

Kindergarten is embarking on an exploration of colors, learning about groups of colors and how to mix colors to create new ones! Oddly enough though, we began our color unit talking about lines. We read Lines That Wiggle, by Candace Whitman, and discussed the different types of lines we saw in the book and around the room. We noticed how many things around us are made of lines! For instance,  the lines on sidewalks, grass, leashes for pets, our hair, spaghetti, and spider webs, just to name a few. We then drew some lines across our papers and painted them with black paint.

By cross-crossing our lines over each other, we created new shapes that would be later be filled in with color. 

On day 2 of our unit we read Press Here, by Herve Tullet. We talked about the most important group of colors: The PRIMARY colors! Red, yellow and blue are the most essential 3 colors because they combine to make all the others we see. The kids used the primary colors to paint in the shapes they created with their lines the previous class. Some showcased the primary colors, keeping them separated in their own shapes. Others discovered new colors as they mixed the primary colors together. 

On day 3 we debriefed, thinking and sharing what happened when we mixed colors and what we liked most about our paintings. We also read a few more books about color, including Mouse Paint by Ellen Stoll Walsh and Little Yellow and Little Blue by Leo Lionni. 

Next we will delve deeper into the world of Color, talking about mixing Primary colors to make Secondary colors, and creating a class collage color wheel! Stay tuned.
