This year, 1st Graders learned about things that we create in art that can be useful and functional in our everyday lives. First we talked about pottery and built clay pinch pots. We brainstormed ways that they can be used when the students bring them home. We then looked at some examples of weavings and the many things that are made from this process, such as clothing, blankets and baskets. We painted some papers in warm and cool colors, cut them up into strips and wove them into small paper weaving samples.
We then put a spin on our weavings, taking something functional and making it disfunctional- making something totally new out of it by using our imaginations to transform it. After reading
Not A Box by Antoinette Portis we changed our weavings into "Not A Weaving" using collage. Students were encouraged to use their imaginations, and add as many details as they could think of.
