Kindergarten Community

Week 2 of Kindergarten introduced shapes, pattern and printing. We used sponges to stamp circles and rectangles across our pages. We talked about creating pattern through repetition and alternating of shapes,  sizes and colors.

We strategically used a variety of skin toned paints to stamp our circles, since we had very special plans for these shapes once they dried. By the end of class, the kids had realized that the shapes resembled people!

The following week we read The Color of Us, by Karen Katz, and discussed how everyone has their own unique color, and we all come together to make a diverse community. Not only is our skin different, but our hair, eyes, noses, mouths and clothes are all different too! After a demonstration of how to draw facial features, arms, legs and details for clothing on their printed shapes, the kids set out to turn their own shapes into a diverse community.
