Kindergarten's Color Exploration! Part 2

As we continued to talk about Color, Kindergarteners were introduced to the Color Wheel, which helps organize the colors. The color wheel is like a pie, with each slice representing a different color. In a basic wheel, there are 6 slices. Three of the slices are the PRIMARY colors (red, yellow and blue) and the other 3 represent the SECONDARY colors (orange, green and purple), which are made my mixing 2 primary colors in various combinations. We talked about how the colors are placed in the wheel, with each secondary color between the 2 primary colors needed to make it. For example, orange is between red and yellow, and green is between yellow and blue.

In our previous lesson, we read the book Mouse Paint, by Ellen Stoll Walsh, and discovered which primary colors are needed to make each of the secondary colors. In Part 2 of our Exploration of Color, kindergarteners constructed their own class color wheels by collaging a piece of the pie with their given colors. In a collage, we cut and glue, instead of draw or paint. Students were given magazines and asked to find things in each of the 6 colors to decorate their pie pieces. They were also given some precut shapes in each color. The kids worked in small groups of 2 or 3 and each class made 2 wheels.

Our final exploration into the world of color will have us creating a triptych painting using the primary colors to mix the secondary colors. Keep your eyes peeled!
