1st Grade Celebrates DOT DAY!!

International Dot Day, celebrated on September 15th, is inspired by the book The Dot by Peter H. Reynolds. The underlying message of the book is that inspiration can be found in the smallest of marks, the simplest of lines. Creating art can be intimidating, but all you have to do is make one small dot on a page to get started.

1st graders read The Dot as well as Pattern Fish by Trudy Harris, and reviewed how to make patterns with just about anything they could imagine.

Each child was given a quarter of circle of paper to decorate using as many patterns and designs as they could think of. We learned about ANALOGOUS colors, looking at the color wheel to find colors that are next to each other, and therefore similar to each other. Each table was given a limited palette of analogous colors to color their patterns. Once finished, we assembled the quarter circles to create whole circles- or COLLABORATIVE DOTS!
