2nd Grade Imagine's A Place....

For weeks now we have been talking about ways in which artists create the illusion of depth in their artwork. By utilizing size, placement of objects in a composition and the horizon line artists create realistic looking 3 dimensional spaces on flat, 2 dimensional surfaces. We studied still life paintings and landscapes, drew from observation, created collages using shapes of varying sizes and practiced using a horizon line in our sketchbooks. FINALLY, we are ready for the final frontier- the culminating project in which we apply all of the knowledge we have been accumulating- IMAGINE A PLACE!!

Students were challenged with creating their own unique landscapes depicting a place that is not like anything we have seen before. The sky's the limit! (as long as they include the horizon line, and show some objects as being close to the viewer and some being far away, using the tools we discussed.)

To get their creative juices flowing, we read Imagine A Place by Sarah Thomson, with paintings by Rob Gonsalves. We used oil pastels to add color to the landscapes, and talked about drawing textures, such as grass, bark on trees, waves in water, grains of sand, and fluffy clouds, to give our drawings even more realism. In this project I stressed CRAFTSMANSHIP, asking kids to pay close attention to detail and take their time. 

The results are colorful and creative! Students reflected on their landscapes, giving their imagined places names and telling the viewers a little bit about what they might find if they were to visit!
