Kindergarten's Exploration of Texture: Part 1

Texture refers to how something feels. In art, there are many to recreate, represent and use textures. Sometimes artists use textured materials directly in their work. Other times they may use the materials to print, or copy,  the texture onto another surface, or create a rubbing, placing paper over the materials and rubbing a crayon or pencil over it. An artist may also chose to recreate the appearance of a texture by drawing or painting it.

Kindergarteners are exploring many different ways to create texture in their artwork. Our first project was creating textured clay medallions. Every student was given a ball of clay to flatten and press a variety of different textured materials into. The materials left imprints of the texture in the clay.                                

                                      

                                   

The clay medallions were fired in the kiln (special oven for clay), and glazed the following week. After the final firing to melt the glaze, giving the medallions a shiny appearance, we added strings and beads to the medallions.
